German Prince Harald von Hohenzollern died at age 63, mere days before his first child is expected to be born.
Princess Josefa von Hohenzollern, his 51-year-old wife, announced his death on social media.
“Dear fellow citizens of Leonberg, today I am writing with a heavy heart. My beloved husband, Harald v. Hohenzollern, died completely unexpectedly of a sudden cardiac death. This loss hits me very deep.”
“I need time to grieve, say goodbye and be there for our unborn child,” the princess wrote. “That’s why I will be stepping back from campaigning and social media in the coming days.”
The princess, who’s expected to give birth in the coming weeks, is running for re-election as the mayor of Leonberg, a town in the German state of Baden-Württemberg.
Prince Harald was reportedly on a business trip in Namibia, where he worked in the diamond industry, when he suffered the fatal cardiac arrest.
He and Josefa met at a trade fair in 2022 and were married last year, according to German outlet Bild.
The House of Hohenzollern, which dates to 1061, is a formal royal German dynasty that is not officially recognized by the German government. The country’s monarchy was abolished following World War I.
