NEW YORK — A police officer and two civilians were shot Monday evening at a Midtown Manhattan office building that houses The Blackstone Group and NFL headquarters by “a lone shooter” who was later “neutralized,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.
The shooting happened at 345 Park Ave. and 51st Street around 6:30 p.m., when police sources say a gunman entered the building with a rifle and started shooting, striking a cop and two civilians.
As of 7:52 p.m. Tisch posted on social media that “the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized.”
Mayor Eric Adams earlier warned New Yorkers to avoid the area in a post on X: “New Yorkers: there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now. Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street.”
The police officer and one of the civilians are in critical condition, a source said. The other civilian is seriously hurt but stable.
The police officer was not on duty, and was working a second job as a security officer at the building at the time of the shooting, sources said. He is assigned to the Bronx.
The FBI is responding to the situation.
The shooter was reportedly wearing a bulletproof vest. Sources say he rode the elevator to the 32nd floor, where he shot himself. His condition is currently unknown.
