Baltimore Police officer in good condition after being shot; suspect dead

BALTIMORE — A Baltimore police officer is in stable condition after being shot Tuesday in Northwest Baltimore and taken to the Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland.
Police officials said a suspect was also shot and killed in the incident, advising people to avoid the surrounding areas.
According to Baltimore Police Department Commissioner Richard Worley, officers responded to the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue for reports of a burglary. He said that when the officers arrived a suspect inside a home opened fire in their direction.
Radio traffic indicated a “Signal 13” — a police call indicating an officer in distress — had been transmitted. Officers had reportedly been responding to a possible hostage situation before shots were fired.
The officers took cover after an officer was shot in the leg, and began applying a tourniquet to the injured officer’s leg.
An additional female victim was reported to have jumped out of one of the building’s windows and was extracted from the area.
SWAT teams then arrived and neutralized the suspect, who was pronounced dead on the scene, and medics transported the injured officer and female victim to Shock Trauma.
Worley said that he and Mayor Brandon Scott had visited the officer — a 36-year-old veteran officer who has been with BPD 13 years — adding he is in good condition and undergoing further treatment and evaluation.
“Kudos to his buddy for having the wherewithal to apply a tourniquet,” said Dr. Thomas M. Scalea, a trauma surgeon at Shock Trauma.
City Council, governor offer support
District 5 city council member Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer praised law enforcement and first responders for their swift action Tuesday.
“First off, I’m hoping for a quick recovery for the officer who was shot,” said Schleifer, who represents the district that includes Park Heights. “I also want to thank BPD and the fire department and the sheriff’s department for their quick response to the scene and handling the situation to prevent any further casualties.”
Schleifer noted the potential danger to nearby residents and places of worship if not for the quick response.
"There are two synagogues right next door to this location and there were a lot of people outside at the time, and so the situation could have been a lot worse if not for the quick response from the police department,” Schleifer said. “I just want to thank them on behalf of the community.”
Gov. Wes Moore said he’s praying for the officer’s recovery after being briefed on the situation.
“Dawn and I are praying for their recovery and keeping everyone affected by this tragedy in our thoughts,” Moore posted on social media. “We have been in close contact with the Baltimore Police Department and I have offered any state support that they may need. I am grateful for the work done by our brave law enforcement officers and medical professionals to ensure that our communities are safe.”
