TOKYO — Preparations are underway for Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to have a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to public broadcaster NHK.

The report comes as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens to bomb key infrastructure in Iran unless the Strait of Hormuz is reopened. Takaichi is seeking a de-escalation of the war and safe passage of vessels in the strait, the report said.

Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi had a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Monday evening, according to a statement released by the Foreign Ministry.

In the phone call, Motegi urged Iran to engage with efforts for mediation by other countries and reiterated the importance of a swift de-escalation of the conflict, the statement read.

Takaichi confirmed in a parliamentary session Monday that the government was preparing for leadership talks with Iran. “We will continue to do everything in our power to find an off-ramp to this situation and return to peace,” she said.
