Joseph diGenova, a loyal ally of President Donald Trump chosen to lead a sprawling criminal investigation into whether former government officials conspired to stymie him, has resigned.

“Yes I did resign,” diGenova said when reached by phone. “It was an honor and a privilege to serve the president and the department. That’ll be it.”

He declined to provide a reason for the resignation, earlier reported by ABC.

A spokesperson for the Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the resignation.

A former U.S. attorney and Trump loyalist, diGenova was brought in by Attorney General Todd Blanche to lead the investigation based in Southern Florida following disagreements with career prosecutors over how best to proceed.

Some Trump allies and Republican lawmakers have taken to calling it the “grand conspiracy” investigation. The president’s allies have long hoped that such an investigation would expose a Democratic conspiracy to sabotage the president during the administrations of former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, Bloomberg has reported.

Some in Justice Department leadership had expressed frustration with diGenova’s handling of the probe and management style prior to his exit, according to a person familiar with the matter.

He didn’t immediately respond to request for comment on the criticism of his tenure.

Prosecutors from headquarters in Washington have been sent to South Florida to steer the investigation, said the person, who asked not to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter.
