A man who allegedly planned an attack on Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has been detained by police, said Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said in a post on X, without giving more detail.

The detention came hours after authorities said they were investigating a plot to assassinate Tusk and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz after receiving credible intelligence in the form of an emailed tip.

The tip is believed to have come from a person with knowledge of an effort to recruit, via social media, members of a radical organization with anti-government views to carry out a gun attack, Polish media reported.

Besides saying there was a high probability that the threatened attack could take place, officials offered few details in a media briefing earlier on Sunday.

“Month after month, year by year, more and more threats and intimidation are being made to the police, the State Protection Service, and the services, concerning Poland and Poles,” Jacek Dobrzyński, press spokesman for Poland’s Special Services ministry, told reporters in Warsaw. “Now we’re talking about threats directed at the most important figures in the country.”

He characterized the threat against Tusk as “a possible assassination attempt” in an earlier post on X.

Officials spoke in Warsaw after an emergency meeting of Poland’s police force, State Protection Service and Internal Security Agency on Sunday morning.
