Funkadelic's 'Live at Meadowbrook 1971' on tap for Record Store Day
Published in Entertainment News
DETROIT — Funkadelic's locally recorded live album "Live at Meadowbrook 1971" will be released on vinyl as part of this year's Record Store Day Black Friday, it was announced Tuesday.
A 50th anniversary vinyl pressing of Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band's "Night Moves" is also among the 180-plus releases slated for the vinyl holiday.
"Live at Meadowbrook 1971" was originally released in 1996 as "Funkadelic Live: Meadowbrook, Rochester, Michigan 12th September 1971," and is the only official live recording from Funkadelic's early era.
The album was recorded at Oakland University's Baldwin Pavilion — now known as Meadow Brook Amphitheatre — just two months after the release of the band's "Maggot Brain" album. Funkadelic shared the bill that night with Buddy Guy & Junior Wells and Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen; tickets were $3.
The set, which has been limited to 3,000 copies, has been newly remastered by audio engineer Dave Gardner, who also remastered "Maggot Brain" and has worked on reissues of Bad Brains' catalog.
The Seger album, honoring the Oct. 1976 release of "Night Moves," was pressed on white vinyl at Jack White's Third Man Records in Detroit. The set is limited to 4,000 copies.
The full Record Store Day Black Friday slate also includes sets by Sombr ("in another life"), Katseye ("KATSEYE: The Dance Breaks"), Bruce Springsteen ("Live at Tower Philly 1975"), the Eagles ("Please Come Home For Christmas/Funky New Year"), 2Pac ("Pac's Life (20th Anniversary Special Edition))," New Edition ("Candy Girl"), Rainbow Kitten Surprise ("The Study/Neon Cross Sessions"), Prince ("3121 Las Vegas Live") and more.
Products are available in limited quantities at participating indie record store retailers on Nov. 27.
