More than two years after Liam Payne’s death in Argentina, the coroner says there is still not enough evidence to definitively determine the cause.

Senior coroner Crispin Butler on Thursday told a pre-inquest review hearing he is still awaiting developments amid an investigation into Payne’s death, BBC News reported. He added that he has not received any new information in the case since the last review in January 2025, during which Dr. Roberto Victor Cohen said the ex-boy bander died from polytrauma or multiple traumatic injuries.

Butler at the time emphasized it could still “take some time” to determine Payne’s cause of death, adding that he planned to seek full reports and eyewitness statements before the final inquest.

On Thursday, Butler said the delay in evidence is due to the fact the probe into Payne’s death is ongoing. He also said he received documentation ahead of the hearing that had “undergone a process of translation,” which will be passed along to Payne’s loved ones. His family was not present at the hearing in Beaconsfield, a suburb in London.

“We have had no further disclosure of evidence from Argentina via the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office,” Butler said.

Payne died in in October 2024 after falling from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires. The “One Direction” alum was at 31 years old. A toxicology report found he had numerous substances in his system, including antidepressants and cocaine, and a blood alcohol level of .27, more than three times the legal driving limit in the U.S.

The next pre-inquest hearing is slated for Dec. 1.
