NEW YORK — “The Book of Mormon” has been forced to cancel additional upcoming performances after a fire damaged the Eugene O’Neill Theater in Midtown earlier this week, officials announced.

Producers and ATG Entertainment, which operates the theater, said in a statement Wednesday night that future shows would be canceled through May 17. It added that it will provide fans with an update in the next few days, emphasizing that performances are “anticipated to resume in the coming weeks.”

Those with tickets for the affected dates will receive a full refund, the statement said.

Earlier Wednesday, the Department of Buildings issued a full vacate order for the 1,108-seat theater due to damage caused by the fire, NBC New York reported.

Firefighters responded to the venue on West 49th Street on Monday shortly after 10 a.m. It marked the only day of the week without a scheduled performance, with shows typically running from Tuesday through Sunday.

In the immediate aftermath of the blaze, producers canceled shows on May 4 and May 5 “out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of the cast and company of The Book of Mormon and our audiences.”

Producers on Wednesday said the flames were limited to the follow spot booth, which houses lights used to track performers on stage. According to officials, the blaze initially broke out in an electrical room between the fourth and fifth floors of the six-story theater. Amid the response, firefighters found additional flames between the fifth floor and the roof.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

The cause of the fire is unclear and remains under investigation.

Since its premiere at the Eugene O’Neill Theater in 2011, there have been more than 5,000 performances of “The Book of Mormon,” which also won nine Tony Awards.
