One teenage survivor was rescued Monday from a boat missing since early Sunday in the Bering Sea.

Two other people in the boat were found dead, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed Tuesday morning. The capsized 18-foot boat was found approximately 4 miles east of St. Lawrence Island on Monday.

A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules crew found the survivor “clinging on the capsized vessel” at about 3 p.m. Monday and deployed a raft along with survival equipment, the Coast Guard said in a statement. The rescue was coordinated with a nearby fishing vessel, the Northwest Explorer.

The 15-year-old survivor was rescued from the overturned skiff experiencing symptoms of hypothermia, the Coast Guard said. “Before departing the scene to refuel, the HC-130 aircrew deployed a line of flares to guide the Northwest Explorer to the overturned vessel,” the agency’s statement said.

Two others were recovered from the water unresponsive, brought aboard the fishing vessel and taken to Nome with the survivor, the Coast Guard said.

The trio left Savoonga on Friday and were expected to return by 3 a.m. Sunday. The Coast Guard said Alaska State Troopers notified them that the group was overdue on Sunday evening.

Weather conditions and bad visibility prevented the HC-130 based at Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak from flying to the area until Monday morning, officials have said. Troopers and local agencies in Savoonga were searching for the boat from the shore Monday.

Savoonga, a Siberian Yupik village of about 800, sits on the northern coast of St. Lawrence Island, which is located just over 160 miles west of Nome and within about 40 miles of Russia.
