Marcos cousin to step down as Philippines' congress speaker

Congressman Martin Romualdez will step down as speaker of the Philippines’ House of Representatives, one of his deputies said, just over a week after a similar change in leadership at the Senate.
Romualdez has told President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. that he will quit as House speaker on Wednesday, Deputy Speaker Ronaldo Puno told ABS-CBN News Channel. Romualdez didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
“He said the reason for this was there’s too much controversy in the House already now and it’s affecting the work everybody is doing,” Puno said.
Puno said Congressman Faustino Dy III, also a deputy speaker, will be nominated by lawmakers to replace Romualdez, a cousin of Marcos.
The shake-up at the House comes amid a corruption crackdown on flood control projects by the Marcos administration. The Philippine leader said earlier this week that no one will be exempted, including his relatives and allies, in the government’s probe into the misuse of public funds for the projects.
Congressman Paolo Ortega, another deputy speaker, said in a mobile-phone message that Romualdez will meet with political party leaders today and will address the issue of whether he’s quitting as speaker.
Last week, the Senate, which is separately investigating corruption in flood mitigation projects, elected a new leader.
