Red Sox call up top prospect Marcelo Mayer

BOSTON — Marcelo Mayer is headed to Fenway Park, multiple sources have confirmed to the Boston Herald.
The long-awaited call for the Red Sox’s top infield prospect comes on the heels of Alex Bregman leaving Friday’s game with ‘right-quad tightness.’
Bregman arrived at the ballpark on Saturday morning feeling worse than the day before and was sent for an MRI, manager Alex Cora announced before Game 1 of the doubleheader. Notably, the Sox skipper didn’t rule Mayer out when discussing ways to fill the infield.
The Red Sox drafted Mayer with the fourth overall pick in 2021, tied with left-hander Ken Brett for their second-highest selection in franchise history, and their highest selection since picking righty Mike Garman third-overall in 1967.
Mayer was promoted to Triple-A last August. Through 43 WooSox games this season, he’s hit .271/.347/.471 with 46 hits (five doubles, one triple, nine home runs), 31 runs, 43 RBIs, 20 walks and 38 strikeouts.
According to NESN’s WooSox reporter, Natalie Noury, Triple-A manager Chad Tracy said, “I sat [Marcelo] down and said ‘Listen they called me and they don’t want you to play Game 2, either. Hard for you to play Game 2 here if they want you to play Game 2 at Fenway.’ He started clapping, big smile.”
Tracy said Mayer was “fired up,” and the entire clubhouse went “bananas” after the shortstop left his office, reported Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. “The reaction was complete happiness for him from his teammates.”
Mayer is the second call-up from Boston’s ‘Big Three’ prospects. When he arrives at Fenway, he’ll reunite with Kristian Campbell, who made his MLB debut on Opening Day.
