Yankees score 10 runs in 5th inning en route to 13-1 romp over Rockies

On Friday, the Yankees suffered a disappointing loss to MLB’s worst team.

Less than 24 hours later, the Bombers got revenge on the Colorado Rockies by exploding for 10 runs in the fifth inning on their way to a 13-1 victory at Coors Field.

The top of the fifth inning featured seven Yankee hits and three walks (one intentional to Aaron Judge) with 14 players entering the batter’s box. The game was tied, 1-1, before Austin Wells recorded a leadoff single off of Kyle Freeland. Oswald Peraza recorded an RBI double to score Wells afterwards.

Then the game got away from Freeland.

Peraza scored on an throwing error, then Cody Bellinger, Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominiguez recorded RBIs of their own. The Yankees then batted around and Wells brought in two more while Paul Goldschmidt and Trent Grisham batted in three more.

Ironically, the best hitter of the team — Judge — struck out on three pitches from Angel Chivilli to end the 10-run frame. Freeland, who entered the matchup with a 5.68 ERA, only saw the average rise to 5.86 after not being charge for four of his eight runs on the throwing error.

He allowed nine hits, three walks and struck out three on 85 pitches over 4 2/3 innings of work. Three Rockies relievers came in following the disastrous outing to total five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of work.

On the other hand, Yankees starter Max Fried continued his 2025 dominance.

The left-hander allowed six hits, a walk and one run while striking out seven in 7 1/3 innings of work. Ian Hamilton pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to wrap up the ballgame.

Fried immediately got run support after Judge hit his 18th home run of the season in the first inning. Rockies first baseman Michael Toglia tied the game in the fourth with an RBI triple off Fried.

But it soon meant nothing since the Yankees blew the game wide open in the following frame.

To add insult to injury, Volple and DJ LeMahieu brought the score to 13-1 after an RBI double and single scored two more, respectively, in the eighth.

Each Yankee in the starting lineup recorded a hit. Bellinger, Goldschmidt, Volpe and LeMahieu led the way with three hits apiece. The Yankees totaled 21 hits, a season high.

Wells, Grisham and Volpe all recorded two RBIs. Wells, Volpe, Judge and Goldschmidt scored two runs each.

The two teams will meet for the rubber match on Sunday.
