Tigers squander early lead, fall to Guardians in extras for third consecutive loss
Published in Baseball
DETROIT — The Guardians scored four times off reliever Brenan Hanifee in the 10th inning on Saturday and beat the Tigers for a third straight night at Comerica Park, 7-5.
Kyle Manzardo sliced a double to left field to score the free runner. Angel Martinez ripped a two-strike double to right to score another. After a sacrifice fly by Bo Naylor, Nolan Jones lined an RBI single to cap it.
The Tigers, after laying dormant for six innings, scored two runs off closer Emmanuel Clase in the bottom of the 10th on a two-run double by Gleyber Torres. Insufficient.
Frustrating night, frustrating series, for the home team.
The Guardians, who trailed 3-2 since the third inning, tied the game in the eighth against reliever Tommy Kahnle.
Two-strike singles by Jose Ramirez and Manzardo set the table. The Guardians produced nine two-strike hits in the game.
With runners at the corners, Kahnle first got Carlos Santana to foul out to third. Then, pinch-hitter Martinez hit a broken-bat two-hopper to first baseman Spencer Torkelson who was playing in.
Martinez is a fast runner but Torkelson might’ve had a chance to turn a double play. He never looked to second. He threw home but Ramirez beat the throw to tie the game.
Gabriel Arias followed with a single to load the bases.
Kahnle got Naylor to pop out to shortstop Trey Sweeney.
Manager AJ Hinch brought in Will Vest at that point and Guardians manager Stephen Vogt countered with left-handed pinch-hitter Jones.
Vest won the battle, getting an inning-ending ground out to keep the game tied.
The Tigers, for the first time in this series, broke on top and played with a lead.
They scored three times in the first inning against Guardians right-hander Luis Ortiz and it didn’t take long for Matt Vierling to make an impact.
After Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith doubled around a walk to Torres, Ortiz retired both Riley Greene and Torkelson with Torres and Keith staying at third and second, respectively.
Vierling, who made his season in a pinch-hitting role Friday night, rescued the inning, slapping a two-run single to right field in his second at-bat of the season.
Ortiz needed 27 pitches to get through that first inning but the Tigers didn’t keep the foot on the gas. Despite walking five, Ortiz was able to get through five innings, allowing just one other hit.
The Tigers managed one base runner between the fifth and seventh innings, grounding out eight times in that stretch.
In the bottom of the eighth, Guardians reliever Cade Smith walked Torres then proceeded to strikeout Keith, Greene and Torkelson, the heart of the Tigers’ order.
Smith punched out the side in the eighth inning on Thursday, too.
Lefty Tim Herrin pitched a clean ninth, striking out right-handed pinch-hitters Justyn-Henry Malloy and Javier Báez.
From the third inning through the ninth, the Tigers went hitless, striking out seven times.
Casey Mize, making his first start since May 8, showed no signs of rust. He set down the first seven hitters, striking out three of them. He put up zeros in four of the five innings he worked.
The only smudge came in the third inning. With one out, Naylor somehow got his barrel to a 2-2 four-seamer that was well above the strike zone and drove it into the seats in right field.
After an error by third baseman Zach McKinstry, Mize walked Lane Thomas after getting ahead of him 1-2.
With two outs, Mize got two strikes on Ramirez. He struck him out with a splitter in the first inning and went back to it. This one was down and outside the zone but Ramirez was able to flip it into center field for an RBI single.
Mize, who missed two starts with a hamstring strain, finished five innings on 77 pitches. He allowed just the one earned run and struck out six. He got six whiffs at 14 splitters and eight called strikes with his four-seam fastball.
He left the game with the Tigers leading 3-2.
Lefty Brant Hurter got five outs. Kahnle got the final out in the seventh before things got messy in the eighth.
