Yankees' Aaron Judge leads vote-getters, earns 7th All-Star nod

NEW YORK — Aaron Judge is heading to his seventh Midsummer Classic.
That became official on Thursday night, as Major League Baseball announced that the Yankees‘ right fielder led all players in the first phase of voting for the All-Star Game, which will take place at Atlanta’s Truist Park on July 15. Judge received a total of 4,012,983 votes.
As the American League’s leading vote-getter, Judge earned an automatic start in the exhibition. Dodgers DH Shohei Ohtani paced the National League with 3,967,668 votes and will start as well.
Votes aren’t the only thing Judge is leading his peers in.
Entering play Thursday, an off day for the Yankees, the reigning American League MVP had the highest average (.361), OPS (1.180), fWAR (6.1) and wRC+ (221) in baseball. Only Seattle’s Cal Raleigh, who finished second among AL players in Phase 1 with 3,040,594 votes, has more home runs than Judge’s 28.
The Mariners catcher began the day with 32 long balls.
While Judge can start planning for a long trip to Atlanta — the Yankees open the second half there — teammates Paul Goldschmidt and Ben Rice were announced as finalists and have advanced to Phase 2 of voting.
Goldschmidt (1,588,603 votes) trailed Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (2,089,666) at first base in Phase 1, while Rice (674,120) lagged behind Baltimore’s Ryan O’Hearn (1,762,125) for the AL’s DH spot.
Cody Bellinger finished sixth among outfielders, narrowly missing a finalist spot behind Detroit’s Javier Báez and Riley Greene, Cleveland’s Steven Kwan and the Angels’ Mike Trout. Because Judge earned an automatic start, AL outfield finalists are competing for two spots.
The NL has six outfield finalists competing for three spots.
Other Yankees with All-Star cases include Max Fried, who could start the game at his old stomping grounds, Trent Grisham, Carlos Rodón and Luke Weaver.
