BALTIMORE — The Orioles’ bullpen is a shell of what it was just a few weeks ago after another trade Tuesday ahead of Thursday’s deadline.

Baltimore continued its deadline fire sale Tuesday by trading relief pitcher Seranthony Domínguez to the Toronto Blue Jays for right-handed pitching prospect Juaron Watts-Brown, two sources with direct knowledge of the move confirmed to The Baltimore Sun.

Domínguez joined Baltimore at last year’s trade deadline and has spent the past year as one of the ballclub’s best high-leverage relievers. The 30-year-old right-hander struggled in May, but increased usage of his splitter transformed his arsenal, making him into one of the sport’s most dominant relievers over the past two months.

Watts-Brown, a 23-year-old in Double-A, was the Blue Jays’ No. 10 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. The 2023 third-round draft pick owns a 3.54 ERA between High-A and Double-A this season with 115 strikeouts in 89 innings.

On the season, Domínguez has a 3.24 ERA and a 30.9% strikeout rate. Since May 26, around the time that he started throwing his splitter more often, he’s posted a 1.14 ERA and 35.1% strikeout rate — some of the best marks among American League relievers. Domínguez has extensive experience as a dominant playoff performer with a career 1.02 ERA in 17 2/3 postseason innings with the Philadelphia Phillies from 2022 to 2024.

The Orioles acquired Domínguez from the Phillies last July for outfielder Austin Hays, who struggled at the plate and with injuries for Philadelphia to end the 2024 season.

Baltimore’s bullpen has lost its four best relievers this month after trading Domínguez. Bryan Baker was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays on July 10 for the No. 37 overall pick in the 2025 draft, which the Orioles used to select high school outfielder Slater de Brun. Gregory Soto was traded to the New York Mets on Friday for two pitching prospects. And closer Félix Bautista was placed on the 15-day injured list with shoulder discomfort last Thursday.

Sportsnet was first to report the trade.
